Advantages and disadvantages of Corona.

Corona effects on communication lines.
Corona has many advantages and disadvantages.  In the correct design of a high voltage overhead
line, a balance should be struck between the advantages and disadvantages.
Below are the Advantages and disadvantages of Corona.
 
Advantages
  •   Due to corona formation, the air surrounding the conductor becomes conducting and hence virtual diameter of the conductor is increased.  The increased diameter reduces the electro-static stresses between the conductors.
  •   Corona reduces the effects of transients produced by surges.
Disadvantages   
  • Corona is accompanied by a loss of energy.  This affects the transmission efficiency of the line.
  •  Ozone is produced by corona and may cause corrosion of the conductor due to chemical action.
  •   The current drawn by the line due to corona is non-sinusoidal and hence non-sinusoidal Voltage drop occurs in the line.  This may cause inductive interference with neighboring Communication lines.Advantages and disadvantages of Corona

  1. how does corona reduces the effect of transients?

    • due to corona, energy is dissipated in the air surrounding the conductor. so whenever there is some voltage transient or surge, the large energy of transient is dissipated in the air around the conductor and hence conductor is saved from damage.

  2. whenever surge occurs due to lightnings,it has the current of (10kA-50kA) and it increases the line voltage 10 times of it,therefore need more larger conductor to flow from it,as we know corona ionizes the surroundings b/w two conductors there4 larger size of conductor,but the contact b/w 2 conductor is a very narrower arc has high level of resistance due to less area,which is used to reduce the

    • Corona has both positive and negative effects
      Positive effects include
      1.Reduces the effects of transients produced by surges
      2.Due to the corona formation, the air that surrounds the conductor becomes conductive hence the virtual diameter of the conductor is increased
      3.due to the increased virtual diameter there is reduction in the electrostatic stress between the conductors

      Negative effects include
      1.Brings about interference with neighboring communication lines
      2.Corona is accompanied with power loss hence low transmission efficiency
      3.Ozone caused by corona may cause corrosion due to chemical action
