U.S. Largest Wind Farm with 916 Turbines Begins Powering One Million Homes Annually

The SunZia Wind Project in central New Mexico has officially entered commercial operation. Developed by Pattern Energy, it is now the largest wind farm in the Western Hemisphere. The project has a total generating capacity of 3,650 megawatts (MW) and can supply enough clean electricity to power about 1 million homes each year.

The wind farm includes 916 turbines spread across Lincoln, Torrance, and San Miguel counties. Its generating capacity is more than three times that of the Hoover Dam, making it one of the world’s largest renewable energy projects. The U.S. Energy Information Administration recognizes SunZia as a major milestone in utility-scale wind power.

The project captures strong and steady desert winds to generate electricity without burning fossil fuels. Each turbine converts the rotation of its blades into electrical power using high-efficiency generators. This produces renewable electricity with no direct carbon emissions during operation.

A key part of the project is the 550-mile SunZia Transmission system. It uses ±525-kilovolt high-voltage direct current (HVDC) technology to carry electricity from central New Mexico to Arizona. HVDC transmission reduces energy losses and allows renewable power to travel efficiently over long distances.

SunZia is already helping reshape the western U.S. electricity grid. California has begun importing electricity from the project, reducing its reliance on natural gas generation. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, increased imports from SunZia contributed to lower gas-fired electricity generation in California during the first half of 2026.

Beyond clean energy, the project is expected to create significant economic benefits. Pattern Energy estimates SunZia will generate billions of dollars in local economic activity over its lifetime. It also provides long-term tax revenue and supports hundreds of permanent and temporary jobs across New Mexico.

Energy experts say SunZia demonstrates how large-scale wind farms and modern HVDC transmission can deliver renewable electricity from remote regions to major cities. As demand for clean power continues to grow, projects like SunZia are expected to play an increasingly important role in strengthening the U.S. electric grid and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
