Australia Cuts Gas & Power Prices with Renewables & Batteries

Australia Beat Surging Gas Prices by Trusting Renewable Energy and Storage Batteries Instead of Fossil Fuels

Australia is showing how renewable energy and battery storage can protect electricity markets from global fuel price spikes. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), wholesale electricity prices in the European Union and Japan rose by more than 30% in the second quarter of 2026 as natural gas prices climbed. In contrast, Australia’s wholesale electricity prices were about 45% lower over the same period.

The biggest reason is the country’s rapid shift toward renewable energy. Wind and solar now supply nearly half of the electricity in Australia’s National Electricity Market. At the same time, grid-scale and household batteries are playing a much larger role in balancing supply and demand.

Australia Gas Price and Green Energy

Battery storage has expanded quickly across the country. The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) says batteries have more than tripled the amount of solar energy shifted from daytime into the evening peak. This reduces the need to run expensive gas-fired power plants when electricity demand is highest.

The IEA says Australia was far less exposed to the recent global LNG price shock because gas now plays a smaller role in electricity generation. By relying more on solar, wind, and batteries, the country has reduced its dependence on volatile international fuel markets.

Recent market data also shows wholesale electricity prices across Australia’s National Electricity Market fell sharply. The June quarter recorded the lowest average wholesale prices since 2020. Strong wind generation and growing battery capacity helped reduce price volatility and lowered the need for gas generation during evening demand peaks.

Lower wholesale prices do not immediately reduce household electricity bills because retailers buy electricity through long-term contracts. However, analysts say sustained lower wholesale prices should gradually benefit homes and businesses over time while improving energy security and cutting emissions.

Australia’s experience is becoming an example for other countries. It shows that combining renewable energy with large-scale battery storage can improve grid reliability and reduce exposure to global fuel price shocks. As more nations expand clean energy, Australia’s model could help shape future electricity systems worldwide.
