SpaceX Launches the World’s First Commercial Nuclear-Powered Satellite Without Solar Panels
SpaceX has launched the world’s first commercially built nuclear-powered satellite aboard its Falcon 9 Transporter-17 rideshare mission. The BOHR (Betavoltaic Orbital High-Reability) CubeSat was developed by Florida-based City Labs. The rocket lifted off from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California with 81 payloads on board.
The BOHR satellite is testing City Labs’ NanoTritium technology in orbit. Instead of using a nuclear reactor or a heat-based power generator, the system converts beta particles released during the natural decay of tritium directly into electricity through a semiconductor. This creates a steady source of low-power electricity for long periods.
Despite early reports, the satellite is not fully operating without solar panels. BOHR still uses conventional solar panels to power its main spacecraft systems. The NanoTritium unit is carried as a technology demonstration payload to validate the new power source under real space conditions.
If the test succeeds, future spacecraft may rely less on sunlight and rechargeable batteries. Betavoltaic systems can provide continuous electricity in places where solar power is limited or unavailable. This could improve mission reliability and extend spacecraft operating life.
The technology is particularly promising for missions to the Moon’s permanently shadowed craters, deep-space probes, and autonomous scientific instruments. These environments receive little or no sunlight, making conventional solar panels less effective. Continuous nuclear micropower could support long-duration exploration.
The mission is also a regulatory milestone. BOHR became the first commercial nuclear-powered satellite approved under the U.S. FAA’s nuclear launch framework established by National Security Presidential Memorandum-20. The achievement could accelerate future commercial and government missions using compact nuclear power systems.
City Labs says BOHR is only the beginning of a new generation of compact nuclear-powered spacecraft. Although today’s system produces only small amounts of electricity, the company plans to scale the technology for future scientific, commercial, and national security missions beyond Earth orbit.
