Standard Voltage (V) and Frequencies (Hz) Around the World

Common 1-Phase & 3-Phase Voltage with Frequency, # of Wires & Plugs/Outlets Used in Different Countries

The following article including the table chart shows the standard household voltage in volts (V) and frequencies in hertz (Hz) for both single phase and three phase power systems in different countries around the world. The chart also shows the plug types and numbers of wires used for the specific power supplies.

The Single-phase power is used for domestic and residential applications (lower load like lighting in homes) while the Three-phase power is used for commercial and industrial applications (higher load like heavy duty electric machines etc. in industries). While some of them having a mixture of high and low power need both the single phase and three phase power supply (i.e. to run the lighting and three phase water heaters etc.).

The majority of countries and regions use power having 50 Hz of frequency while almost 55+ regions and countries use power of 60 Hz of frequency.

The chart also shows the commonly used different types of plugs and outlets and number of wires in different countries which is really helpful for travelers to pick a right charger and adapter according to the next destination.

Common Voltage and Frequency in Different Countries

Good to know:

  • Less common and higher voltage systems (more than 480V) required for heavy duty applications are not included in this chart.
  • Converting from 60 Hz to 50 Hz can result in a performance loss on most generator sets.
  • Converting from 50 Hz to 60 Hz can sometimes increase the kW output by speeding up the engine RPM.
  • For stable and smooth operations, adjustment in operation of the generator set is needed according to the user manual. To do so, contact the experienced and incensed electrician.
  • Do not contact the 120V appliance in 230V/240V outlet (and vice versa) until and unless mentioned by the manufactures and user manuals.

As a summary, below is a list of common voltages and frequencies used around the world:

North America (including USA, Canada, and Mexico):

  • 1-Phase = 120 V, 60 Hz.
  • 3-Phase = 120/208 V / 277/480 V / 120/240 V / 240 V / 480 V – 60 Hz.

South America (including Brazil):

  • 1-Phase = 127 V or 220 V, 60 Hz.
  • 3-Phase = 220 V / 380 V 60 Hz.

Europe (including UK, France, Germany, and Spain):

  • 1-Phase = 230 V, 50 Hz.
  • 3-Phase = 415 V, 50 Hz.

Australia and New Zealand:

  • 1-Phase = 230 V, 50 Hz.
  • 3-Phase = 400 V, 50 Hz.

China & Russia

  • 1-Phase = 220 V, 50 Hz.
  • 3-Phase = 380V, 50 Hz.

Japan:

  • 1-Phase = 100 V, 50 Hz / 60 Hz.
  • 3-Phase = 200 V, 50 Hz / 60 Hz

South Korea:

  • 1-Phase = 220 V, 60 Hz.
  • 3-Phase = 380 V, 60 Hz.

India & Pakistan

  • 1-Phase = 230 V, 50 Hz.
  • 3-Phase = 415 V, 50 Hz.

Middle East – UAE, Iran & Israel

  • 1-Phase = 230 V, 50 Hz.
  • 3-Phase = 400 V, 50 Hz.

Middle East – KSA

  • 1-Phase = 230 V, 60 Hz.
  • 3-Phase = 400 V, 60 Hz.

Africa – Nigeria, Sudan, Somalia etc.

  • 1-Phase = 220V / 230 V, 50 Hz.
  • 3-Phase = 380 V / 400V, 50 Hz.

South Africa

  • 1-Phase = 230 V, 50 Hz.
  • 3-Phase = 380 V, 60 Hz.

It’s important to note that some countries may have different voltages and frequencies within their own borders, so it’s always best to double-check before using electrical equipment in a foreign country. Additionally, certain types of appliances (such as those with motors) may not work properly with voltages and frequencies different from what they were designed for.
