American Wire Gauge “AWG” Calculator – AWG Size Chart & Table

AWG “American Wire Gauge” Size Calculator & Cable Properties Table & Chart

American Wire Gauge “AWG” Calculator

The following American Wire Gauge (AWG) calculator will calculate the diameter in mm, inches, cross sectional area in mm2, inches2 and kcmil or MCM, resistance per 1000 feet and per 1000 meters and the current rating in amperes for chassis wiring and power transmission applications. To calculate the values, just select or enter the AWG size and hit the “Calculate” button to get the result of different properties of AWG cables and wires.

Select Gauge #:
Or Enter Gauge #: AWG
Select Wire Type:
Resistivity “ρ” : Ω.m

Diameter in Millimeters: mm
Diameter in Inches: in
Cross Sectional Area in Square Millimeters: mm2
Cross Sectional Area in Square Inches: in2
Cross Sectional Area in kilo Circular Mils: kcmil
Resistance per 1000 Feet*: Ω/kft
Resistance per 1000 Meters*: Ω/km

Good to know: AWG or American Wire Gauge is also known as “Brown and Sharpe Wire Gauge” used in North America for wire sizing.

*The data for resistance of copper and other wires in Ω/km and Ω/kft are at 20°C or 68°F.

Wire Diameter in mm & Inch Calculation

Wire Diameter in mm “millimeters”.

dn = 27 x 10-3 x 92(36-n)÷39

dn = 0.127 x 92(36-n)÷39     …     In millimeters (mm).

Where:

  • d = The wire diameter in millimeter “mm”.
  • n = Number of the gauge size.

Wire Diameter in Inches “in”.

dn = 5 x 10-3 x 92(36-n)÷39

dn = 0.005 x 92(36-n)÷39     …     In inches

Where:

  • d = The wire diameter in inches “in”.
  • n = Number of the gauge size.

Wire Cross Sectional Area in Square Millimeter “mm2“.

An = (π ÷ 4) x dn2

An = 12.668 x 10-392(36-n)÷19.5

Where:

  • An = Cross sectional area of “n” gauge wire size in square millimeters “mm2“.
  • n = The number “#” of gauge size.
  • d = Wire square diameter in “mm2“.

Wire Cross Sectional Area in Square Inches “in2“.

Where:

  • An = Cross sectional area of “n” gauge wire size in square inches “in2“.
  • n = The number “#” of gauge size.
  • d = Wire square diameter in “in2“.

Wire Cross Sectional Area in kcmil “kilo circular mils”.

An = 1000 x dn2 = 0.025 x 92(36-n)÷19.5

Where:

  • An = cross sectional area of “n” gauge wire size in kcmil.
  • kcmil = kilo circular mils.
  • n = the number of gauge size.
  • d = wire square diameter in in2.

Note: kcmil is also known as MCM “thousands of circular mils” i.e. 1kcmil = 1MCM = 0.5067 mm2.

2 MCM ≈ 1 mm2

1000 mils = 1 inch

In addition, MCM and kcmil is used for large diameter wires in AWG.
