How to Convert Farad & Microfarad to kVAR? Calculator and Examples

Microfarad to kVAR Calculator

The following microfarad to kVAR conversion calculator will convert the capacitance of a capacitor “C” into reactive power “Q” (i.e. volt amperes reactive or VAR). It will convert the capacitance in microfarads “μF” in Volt-Amp-reactive “VAR”, kilo-volt-amp-reactive “kVAR” and  mega-volt-amp “MVAR”.

Both μ-farad and kVAR are terms used in capacitor banks and power factor improvement & correction to eliminate the reactive components from the load side which has multiple advantages.

To calculate the kVAr rating of a capacitor from the capacitor’s microfarad rating, just enter the value of capacitance in microfarad, voltage in volts, frequency in hertz and hit the “Calculate” button to the get the result of capacitor in VAR, kVAR and MVAR. It is the value of the quantity which eliminate the amount of reactive power to correct the power factor.

Enter Capacitance in µ-Farads: µF
Enter Frequency in Hertz: Hz
Enter Voltage in Volts: V

Farad & μF to kVAR Conversion Formulas & Equations

The SI unit of reactive power “Q” is VAR “Volt-Amp-Reactive”. For higher values, we mostly use kVAR “103” or MVAR “106” etc.

Similarly, The SI unit of capacitor for capacitance is Farad. As it is a big unit and unusual to use it for small capacitors, here comes small units i.e. mF “millifarad = 10-3” and μF “microfarad = 10-6“.

Q in kVAR  = (C in μF x Frequency in Hertz x Voltage2 in Volts) ÷ x 159.155 x 106

kVAR = C x f x V2 ÷ (159.155 x 106)      …     in kVAR

or

Q in kVAR = C in μF  x 2π x Frequency in Hertz x Voltage2 in Volts x 10-9)

kVAR = C x 2π x f x V2  x 10-9     …     in kVAR

kVAR = C x f x V2  x 6.283 x 10-9     …     in kilovolt-amperes-reactive

In Short:

  • VAR = C in μF x f x V2 ÷ (159.155 x 103)      …     in VAR
  • kVAR = C in μF x f x V2 ÷ (159.155 x 106)      …     in kVAR
  • MVAR = C in μF x f x V2 ÷ (159.155 x 109)      …     in MVAR

or

  • VAR = C x 2π x f x V2  x 10-6     …     VAR
  • kVAR = C x 2π x f x V2  x 10-9     …     in kVAR
  • MVAR = C x 2π x f x V2  x 10-12     …     in MVAR

Where:

  • kVAR = kilo Volt-ampere-reactive “Q”
  • C = Capacitance of a Capacitor in μF
  • V = Voltage in volts
  • f = Frequency in Hertz

How to Convert μF & Farad to kVAR?

To convert the capacitor bank Microfarad to VAR, kVAR or MVAR, you must know the value of voltage, kVAR and supply frequency (i.e. 50Hz or 60Hz). Lets see the following solve example which shows how to convert the microfarad into VAR, kVAR and MVAR.

Example:

A 115 μF capacitor is connected across the 240V supply having 60 Hz of frequency for power factor correction. Find the value of capacitor bank in VAR, kVAR and Mega-VAR.

Solution:

Putting the values in the related formulas as follows:

Capacitor Value in VAR:

  • kVAR = 115μF x 60Hz x 240V2 ÷ (159.155 x 103)
  • VAR = 2497.188 VAR

Capacitor Value in kVAR :

  • kVAR = 115μF x 60Hz x 240V2 ÷ (159.155 x 106)
  • kVAR = 250 kVAR

Capacitor Value in MVAR:

  • kVAR = 115μF x 60Hz x 240V2 ÷ (159.155 x 109)
  • MVAR = 0.0025 MVAR
