How to Operate and Control a Three-Phase Motor on Single-Phase Power Supply Using VFD?

Three-phase motors are commonly used in industrial and commercial applications due to their efficiency and performance. However, there are instances where a three-phase motor needs to be operated on a single-phase power supply. This could be due to various reasons such as power availability, retrofitting existing systems, or specific applications.

In such cases, a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) can be used to operate a three-phase motor on a single-phase supply. In this wiring guide, we will show how to run a 3-Phase Motor on 1-Phase supply with reverse-forward and ON/OFF operation using VFD with the help of given wiring and control circuit diagrams.

Understanding the Challenge

Three-phase motors are designed to operate with three alternating current (AC) phases that are 120 degrees out of phase with each other. This design provides smoother operation and higher efficiency compared to single-phase motors.

When running a three-phase motor on a single-phase supply, the motor will not start or operate as intended due to the absence of the required phase difference. This is when we require a VFD to operate a 3-phase motor on a single-phase power supply.

The Role of Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)

A Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) is an electronic device that can control the speed and torque of an AC motor by adjusting the frequency and voltage of the supplied power. VFDs are commonly used in industrial applications to save energy, optimize motor control, and enable the operation of motors on different power supplies.

In this setup, we will use a VFD which is capable of converting the single-phase supply into a three-phase supply to operate a 3-phase load on a 1-phase power supply.

Components Required

  1. Three-Phase Motor
  2. 2-P MCB
  3. Variable Frequency Drive (VFD)
  4. Single-Phase Supply
  5. Selector Switch for manual ON/OFF and REV/FWD Operation
  6. Wires & Cables
  7. Programmable logic controller (PLC) for controlling the VFD’s operation (Optional)
  8. Braking Resistor for speed control of motor (Optional)

Wiring & Controlling of 3-Phase Load on 1-Phase Supply

Power Wiring:

Choose a VFD that is compatible with both the three-phase motor and the single-phase power supply. The VFD should be capable of converting the single-phase input into a three-phase output with the necessary frequency and voltage adjustments. To wire the power circuit:

  • Connect the 100-230V AC single-phase power supply from the 2-P MCB to the VFD’s via two wires viz “L” (Line or Phase), “N” (Neutral) and Ground/Earth terminals.
  • Now connect the three-phase motor terminals (U1, V1 and W1) to the VFD’s output terminals of U, V and W. Make sure the correct phases are matched and in sequence. If not sure, follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for proper wire sizing and connections.

Control Wiring:

Connect external control devices (such as ON/OFF & REV/FWD switches, indicators, PLC etc.) to the VFD’s control digital inputs.  For this basic reverse/forward and speed control of three-phase motor using single-phase supply, follow the following steps:

  • Connect DI1 to the Reverse terminal of selector witch.
  • Connect DI2 to the Forward terminal on selector Switch.
  • Connect the GND from VFD to the OFF (common) terminal of selector switch and common (GND) terminal of potentiometer.
  • Connect the AI1 to the Output terminal and 10V to the VCC terminal of potentiometer respectively.
  • Additionally, You may connect the A+ and B+ to the external PLC using RJ45 connector (Optional).
  • Optionally, You may connect a breaking resistor to the P+ and PB terminal on VFD.

Steps to Run a Three-Phase Motor on Single-Phase Supply Using a VFD

Access the VFD’s control panel or software interface and configure the settings for operating a three-phase motor on a single-phase supply. This typically involves specifying the motor parameters, input power details, and desired operating frequency.

After verifying all connections and configurations, start the motor using the VFD’s control panel or interface. The VFD will convert the single-phase input power into a simulated three-phase output power with adjustable frequency and voltage.

Monitor the motor’s performance and adjust the VFD’s parameters as needed to achieve the desired speed, torque, and efficiency. Fine-tuning may be required to optimize the motor’s operation on the single-phase supply.

The selector switch can be used to ON. OFF, Forward and Reverse operation of the motor. External and optional devices such as braking resistor and PLC can be used to speed control and variable frequency operation etc.
