How to Install a NEMA 15-60, Three-Phase, 60A – 250V Receptacle with Breaker and GFCI Protection

NEMA 15-60 Receptacle

The NEMA 15-60R is a 3-pole, 4-wire grounding receptacle rated for 60A and 250V, 3-phase power supply. This configuration is designed for 3-phase loads that do not require a neutral connection. It is a heavy-duty, industrial-grade straight-blade outlet designed for high-power applications in commercial and industrial settings, such as powering heavy machinery, welding equipment, and industrial ovens.

As NEMA 15-60 is a 3P, 4W receptacle rated for 50A/250V, three phase power, it means it is doesn’t require a Neutral wire. This way, it is wired via three hot lines (phase wires) and a ground wire. 15-60R as an industrial grade, straight blade, flush mounting are available from different manufacturers such as Hubble and Leviton etc.

Terminals

There are four terminals in a 15-60 receptacle in accordance with UL 498 and CSA:

  • G (U) Shaped Terminal – Green Screw: Connects to  the Ground (G) for EGC () – Bare or Green Wire.
  • Y Terminal – Vertical Slot (I) – Brass Screw: Connects to HOT 1 (Line 1)
  • X Terminal – Horizontal Slot (➖) – Brass Screw: Connects to HOT 2 (Line 2)
  • Z Horizontal Slot (➖) – Brass Screw: Connects to HOT 3 (Line 3)

The following wiring tutorials shows how to wire a NEMA 15-60 (60A – 250V, 3-Φ) receptacle with a 60A 3-pole standard or GFCI breaker.

Wiring NEMA 15-60 with a 3-Pole Breaker

1. Turn OFF the main breaker inside the main panel / sub-panel. Panel lugs above the main breaker remain energized even the breaker is OFF, do not touch!.

2. Install a 60A 3-pole breaker suitable for your system (208V/240V/480V etc.). Just connect: and tighten the terminal screws up to 25 in.-lb (3 N·m) or according to the manufacturer torque as follow.

  • L1 → Breaker Pole 1
  • L2 → Breaker Pole 2
  • L3 → Breaker Pole 3

3. Run 3-phase conductors to the receptacle junction box as follows:

  • Pull (3) #4AWG (or #6) copper (THHN/THWN-2) for hot wires
  • Pull (1) #10 AWG ground wire

4. Terminate at the NEMA 15-60R as follow:

  • X → Hot 1 (L1)
  • Y → Hot 2 (L2)
  • Z → Hot 3 (L3)
  • Ground → Ground screw (green)

For outdoor installations of NEMA 15-60, use a NEMA 3R weatherproof 2-gang enclosure to protect the receptacle from moisture and environmental exposure.

Good to Know: A NEMA 15-60 is 3-phase, 4-wire (3 hots + ground). It does NOT use a neutral.

Wiring NEMA 15-60 with a 3-P GFCI

A 3-pole GFCI breaker works exactly like a normal 3-pole breaker except for the white pigtail. In this case, connect the three-pole GFCI as follow:

  • L1 → Breaker terminal 1
  • L2 → Breaker terminal 2
  • L3 → Breaker terminal 3

As NEMA 15-60 has no neutral, hence do NOT connect any neutral wire to the load. Connect the GFCI pigtail (white wire) to the neutral busbar in the panel. Ground wire remains unchanged as shown for the standard breaker as shown in the following fig.

Good to Know: Even though the load has no neutral, the GFCI breaker must have its built-in pigtail connected to the neutral bar to monitor imbalance.

How Many Amps Can NEMA 15-60 Handle Safely?

A NEMA 15-60 is a heavy duty receptacle designed to handle 60-amp safely. Both the plug and the receptacle are specifically rated for 60A continuous duty.

How Many Watts Can a NEMA 15-60 Receptacle Hold?

As it is operated on 3-phase 250V supply, it can handle up to 25,000 Watts.

As power in a three-phase supply is equal to P = √3 × V × I

At 240V – 3-Phase:

1.732 × 60A × 250V ≈ 25kW

Actual usable power may be lower depending on load characteristics, power factor, and manufacturer requirements (such as Hubble NEMA 15-60 is rated for 12kW).

Which Breaker Size is Suitable for a NEMA 15-60 Receptacle?

As per NEC 210.19(A)(1), 210.20(A), and 210.23(E), the correct breaker size for 60-amp receptacle (such as NEMA 15-60) is a 3-pole 60A breaker or GFCI rated for 250V – 3-phase.

What is the Correct Wire Size and Cable Type to Use with a NEMA 15-60?

The suitable wire size for 60A circuit is determined using NEC tables. For a 60A NEMA 15-60 receptacle, the minimum required wire size is #4AWG as per NEC Table 310.16. Similarly, the ground conductor can be smaller than the non-grounded conductors i.e. you may use #10AWG for EGC as per NEC Table 250.122.

Copper Wire (Recommended):

  • 4 AWG copper (THHN/THWN in conduit) – Standard for 60A
  • 4/2 or 4/3 copper NM-B (where permitted)
  • Avoid aluminum wire for receptacles due to heat and resistance concerns.

Cable Types:

  • THHN/THWN conductors in EMT or PVC conduit
  • NM-B (dry indoor locations only)
  • SER cable (for feeder applications)

  • NEMA 15-60 is a three-phase outlet used in industrial and commercial setting.
  • 15-60R are hardwired on a dedicated circuit.
  • Use a 2-gang – NEMA 3R rainproof enclosure for NEMA 15-60, especially for outdoor applications.
  • According to NEC Table – 310.16, the correct wire size for a 60A circuit and outlet is #4 AWG copper. Likewise, the appropriate breaker size is a 60A, 250V, three-pole breaker (or 60A 3-P, GFCI breaker). With this circuit, use #10 AWG copper for equipment grounding conductor (EGC).
  • NEMA 15-60 (as an industrial grade) can supply full 60A for both continuous and non-continuous circuits.
  • Use #4/3 cable (3 Hots + 1 ground) for wiring a 3-phase NEMA 15-60 receptacle with a 3-pole breaker or GFCI rated for 240V.
